A car careened off a University City-area freeway ramp Wednesday, went down an embankment and overturned, leaving the driver trapped until emergency crews could free him from the damaged vehicle.
The 34-year-old San Diego man lost control of his white BMW sedan on the ramp from westbound state Route 52 to La Jolla Parkway shortly after 8 a.m., while veering to avoid running over some sort of debris in his path, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The car crashed off the connector and rolled down the steeply sloping roadside, CHP public-affairs Officer Jesse Matias said. Firefighters, aided by a helicopter crew hovering overhead, extricated the motorist and got him out of the ravine.
Paramedics took the man to a hospital for treatment of what appeared to be minor injuries, the Highway Patrol spokesman said.
Intoxication was not believed to have been a factor in the accident, according to Matias.
