The water-contact closure in place for the Tijuana Slough and Imperial Beach was extended north Saturday to include the Silver Strand shoreline in Coronado, county health officials said.

The Tijuana River flow reached recreational waters as south swell conditions pushed ocean waters from the south to the north, the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality reported.

Beachgoers at the Silver Strand were advised that nearby waters contain sewage and may cause illness. The closure will remain in effect until sampling and field observations confirm the areas to be safe for water contact.

The shoreline from the border to the north end of Imperial Beach also will remain closed until satisfactory samples are returned.

Tidelands Park in Coronado, Shelter Island, La Jolla Cove, Campland in Mission Bay, and Children’s Pool in La Jolla remain under advisories. Beachgoers were warned that bacteria levels in those areas exceed state health standards.
