Police have arrested a motorist suspected in the hit-and-run death of a teenaged pedestrian in a North County crosswalk.
Jon Edwin Kiesel, 70, of Escondido, was taken into custody and jailed at 12:54 p.m. Sunday on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, said Escondido police Lt. Scott Walters.
Investigators identified Kiesel after combing through physical evidence, witness statements and law enforcement databases to determine that the vehicle involved in the collision was a black 2021 Lexus RX350.
Police also found that the boy was crossing at Bear Valley Parkway and Grand Avenue against a “no walk” sign before being struck by a vehicle traveling north on Bear Valley on a green light.
The police department received a 911 call at 9:27 p.m. Saturday reporting a collision involving a pedestrian, Walters said.
Officers arrived within minutes and discovered a 14-year-old boy lying in the roadway, the lieutenant said. The motorist who hit him had fled the scene.
They immediately began CPR until the Escondido Fire Department arrived, Walters said. Paramedics rushed the boy to Palomar Medical Center where he later died. Authorities have not yet released the boy’s identity.
The primary investigator on the case is Officer Paul Smyth. Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call him at 760-839-4423.
