A male driver and female passenger died Saturday when a Nissan Rogue crashed into a wall while exiting southbound Interstate 805, police said.
At approximately 9:53 a.m., the Chula Vista Police Department received several calls regarding a single-vehicle crash into a wall near East Palomar Street at the I-805 off-ramp, Officer Ryan Culver said.
“Several witnesses indicated the vehicle proceeded straight through the intersection before colliding with a concrete and steel wall for unknown reasons,” the officer said. “Multiple witnesses attempted to provide medical aid to the driver until officers and paramedics arrived.”
First responders took over for the witnesses, attempting life-saving measures on the victims, Culver said. The driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Medics also pronounced the female passenger dead at the scene.
Authorities withheld the names of the two victims pending notification of family members. OnScene.TV reported that the decedents were elderly.
The CVPD’s Traffic Bureau was investigating the accident.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has additional information was asked to contact the CVPD at 619-417-9436.
