A man convicted of killing another man in El Cajon by stabbing and cutting him more than 100 times has been sentenced to 30 years to life in state prison.

Gustavo Rojas Salgado, 27, was convicted by an El Cajon jury of first- degree murder and a knife-use allegation in the death of 33-year-old Victor Saul Garcia Jr.

Garcia’s body was discovered in his Marline Avenue home by a family member on Oct. 23, 2020, according to El Cajon police, who said there appeared to be a struggle at the home, resulting in Garcia’s stabbing.

Deputy District Attorney Christina Arrollado said the victim and defendant were friends, and that Garcia suffered “over 100 stab and incised wounds.”

The motive for the murder remains unknown, the prosecutor said.

Salgado was arrested more than a month later in Spring Valley.

He was sentenced Tuesday to 29 years to life, plus an additional consecutive one-year sentence for a separate probation revocation case.
