Downtown Chula Vista will host its second annual Día de los Muertos celebration with music, dancing, a film and more at 3 p.m. Saturday.
The free community event, at Memorial Park, will feature live music, an altar and Catrín/Catrina ensemble competition, face painting, sugar-skull decorating, flower arrangements from Tallo and pan de muerto from Dulcet, and a 7 p.m. screening of Disney Pixar’s Coco at the Memorial Bowl.
Día de los Muertos – which, translated, means Day of the Dead, falls on Nov. 1-2 – gives loved ones a chance to honor lost ancestors and embrace and celebrate their memories. Attendees can add to the community altar at Third Avenue and Davidson Street or create their own.
Members of the community also will have the chance to participate in two competitions, for altar-building and Catrín ensembles, to win cash prizes ranging from $150 to $1000.
“We truly hope everyone will come out and celebrate with us, learn about this incredible day and soak in the culture,” said Dominic Li Mandri, district manager of the Downtown Chula Vista Association.
The event is made possible in part by support from the city of Chula Vista and the Create Chula Vista Arts Grant.
