Caltrans District 11 will host an in-person hiring event in Old Town from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday to fill dozens of open positions.
The jobs for the state Department of Transportation include equipment operators, highway and landscape maintenance workers, and maintenance service assistants.
Those interested in working for Caltrans can attend the job fair at District 11 headquarters, 4050 Taylor St., walking distance from the Old Town Transit Station.
Many of the positions are funded through Clean California, Gov. Gavin Newsom’s multi-year $1-billion cleanup effort to create thousands of jobs, remove litter and engage communities in beautification efforts.
In San Diego, Clean California led to 89 hires by the state and dozens more via contracted employment programs through hiring fairs and recruitment efforts since July 2021. Close to half the applicants hired at last year’s event have been promoted to positions with more responsibility and higher pay.
That’s one of the highest percentage of promotions for any of the 12 Caltrans districts in the state. More than 750 new team members have been hired statewide.
Caltrans hit a major milestone this month, announcing the removal of 1 million cubic yards of litter from roadsides throughout the state since the Clean California program’s inception.
That’s more than 16,700 tons of litter – 300% more removed from the state highway system than in 2020. Fun fact: That’s enough to build two stacks of trash from the Earth’s surface to beyond the International Space Station, 250 miles in orbit.
