There was little to point to with pride following the Aztecs’ 35-7 loss to Utah, San Diego State’s football coach admitted this week.
Brady Hoke ticked off the failures – too many penalties, an inability to find an offensive rhythm, the defense not forcing turnovers.
Ultimately, he said of the loss to the now No. 13 Utes, “we never got started, particularly offensively.”
An injury to starting quarterback Braxton Burmeister didn’t help – he took a poke in the eye – but Hoke said he’ll be “good to go” as SDSU (1-2) faces Toledo (2-1) for the first time. It will be the third game at San Diego’s new Snapdragon Stadium, at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
Running back Chance Bell, though, looks unlikely to return this week, Hoke said.
One person who will not be there is Will Haskell, the young quarterback who entered the game for just one play last week before giving way to freshman Kyle Crum.
The redshirt freshman announced on Twitter that he has “decided to enter the transfer portal and is “excited to see what’s in store for the future.”
Hoke said he understood the decision.
“Guys want to play and if they’re not playing, they’re not staying. I get that. He’s a competitor,” Hoke said.
As are the remaining Aztecs, one of whom sees a silver lining for his team. “We have not peaked yet. We’re nowhere near close to peaking,” linebacker Caden McDonald said.
He pointed to the defense’s early performance against Utah, when the Aztecs held the Utes scoreless in the first quarter.
“We were on a roll. We were playing very, very good football, but there’s room to improve all around,” he said.
