An armed man barricaded in an Oceanside home with children and other residents was in jail Monday following a two-hour police standoff.
Oceanside Police officers responded to a call about a man armed with a knife at a residence in the 100 block of Ely Street around 10:45 a.m. on Sunday.
When police arrived, the suspect came out of the house and approached officers with the knife. However, he attempted to retreat back into the home when officers “made attempts to safely detain the suspect,” said Jennifer Atenza, public information officer for the department.
Officers fired bean-bag rounds to divert the suspect from re-entering the home, and he went into a garage that was not connected to the home. The suspect then began stabbing the garage door and “made threats to shoot officers,” Atenza said.
During this time, police removed the residents from the home.
A negotiations team arrived at the scene to attempt de-escalation measures. The suspect did not cooperate, but grabbed a butane torch and began making threats to set the house on fire.
A K9 unit was then deployed, but the suspect surrendered around 1 p.m. before the dog made contact.
Rosendo Ceballos, 32, was arrested and booked on suspicion of multiple charges including domestic violence, resisting arrest and making criminal threats.
